Types of Commercial Signs Permitted in Abu Dhabi
The DMT permits six types of commercial signs, divided into primary and secondary categories:
Primary Signs (Ground Floor Businesses)
1. 3D Stencil Cut: Letters with minimum 0.5 cm depth cut into a background or layered onto a surface
2. 3D with Background: Three-dimensional letters mounted on a fabricated background panel
3. 3D without Background: Letters mounted directly onto the building surface
4. Internal Window Sign: 3D internally lit letters mounted inside a window
Secondary Signs (Mezzanine/Supplementary)
• Banner: A sign displayed perpendicular to the building
• Projecting Sign: Stencil cut or 3D letters on a background displayed perpendicular to the building
General Placement Rules for All Signs

• Signs must be mounted directly against the building surface or flush with recessed storefronts
• No sign may cover major architectural elements of a building
• Signs must not obstruct views into and out of business premises
• All signs within a signage zone must be consistent in height and position

Electrical & Lighting Requirements
• All cables, wires, and electrical equipment must be contained within the sign
• Cables must be concealed in the wall or in neatly finished conduits

• Facades over 15 meters: Maximum sign area 12 m², letter height up to 2 meters
